The Padma Awards 2019 were announced on 25th January, Friday, on the occasion of Republic Day. The awards which are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan( for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan(for distinguished service of a high order ) and Padma Shri (for distinguished service in any field) is known to the highest civilian award in India.
Here, we bring for you a list of Padma Awards 2019 winners for their contribution to social work in the fields of Environment, Divyang Welfare, Culture, Animal Welfare, micro-finance, affordable education and tribal welfare
1. Shri Darshan Lal Jain
Shri Darshan Lal Jain from Haryana was awarded Padma Bhushan for his efforts and contribution towards education to girls and poor children. He gave up his family business and took an interest in Social Work and has been working to establish the honor of our valiant kings and soldiers and freedom fighters, besides the revival of the Saraswati river.
2. Ms. Muktaben Pankajkumar Dagli
Muktaben Pankajkumar Dagli from Gujarat received Padma Shri for Social Work- Divyang Welfare
3. Ms. Draupadi Ghimiray
Ms. Draupadi Ghimiray established Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti (SVSS) for the betterment, encouragement, and inspiration for the physically handicapped people of Sikkim to live a normal life and to contribute to the development of the society. Ms. Ghimiray who continues to serve the physically challenged received Padma Shri for Social Work- Divyang Welfare.
4. Shri Bulu Imam
Bulu Imam is an environmental activist working for the protection of tribal culture and heritage in Jharkhand. Mr. Imam, who received Padma Shri award for Social work- culture, has been promoting tribal art of the region through his establishments the Sanskriti Museum & Art Gallery in Hazaribagh and Tribal Women Artists Cooperative (TWAC), which has held over 50 international exhibitions of Khovar and Sohrai paintings in Australia, Europe, and the UK.
5. Ms. Friederike Irina
40 years ago, Ms. Friederike Irina came to India as a German tourist started her cowshed known as 'Surbhai Gauseva Niketan' has been taking care of over 1200 abandoned cows and calves by providing food and medicine. Ms. Irina received Padma Shri award for Social Work-Animal Welfare.
6. Shri Rajani Kant
Rajani Kant from Uttar Pradesh received Padma Shri for Social Work.
7. Shri Ramesh Babaji Maharaj
Shri Ramesh Babaji Maharaj from Uttar Pradesh received Padma Shri for Social Work- Animal Welfare.
8. Shri Daitari Naik
Odisha's Canal Man Daitari Naik, who had carved out about a kilometer-long canal in a stream to irrigate his land, received Padma Shri for Social Work.
9. Ms. Madurai Chinna Pillai
Chinna Pillai started a very successful banking system in the villages in Tamil Nadu and is a champion trying to reduce poverty and debt grievances by empowering women. Pillai received Padma Shri for Social Work-finance for her intent efforts in leading a savings unit among women in the debt-stricken village.
10. Shri Devarapalli Prakash Rao
Devarapalli Prakash Rao, a tea seller from Odisha, who has been imparting education among 80 slum children from the earnings he makes as a tea vendor, received Padma Shri for Social Work-Affordable Education
11. Shri Shabbir Sayyad
Shabbir Sayyad from Maharashtra was awarded Padma Shri for Social Work- Animal Welfare for his contribution to the welfare of cows.
12. Shri Mahesh Sharma
Mahesh Sharma, the current Minister of State- Culture, received Padma Shri for Social Work- Tribal Work.
13. Shri Jyoti Kumar Sinha
J.K Sinha, an ex-RAW officer, founded the Shoshit Seva Sangh (SSS) to provide quality education to the Musahar children was awarded Padma Shri for Social Work- Affordable Education. The school provides free education to students until class 12 as well as free boarding, lodging, clothing, healthcare, and other necessities
14. Ms. Saalumarada Thimmakka
Saalumarada Thimmakka also known as Alada Marada Timakka who is noted for her work in planting and tending to 385 banyan trees along a four-kilometer stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur received Padma Shri for Social Work- Environment.
15. Ms. Jamuna Tudu
Jamuna Tudu who has more than 300 groups, with around 30 people in each group, working in Muturkham village of Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district to save the forest land from the mafia received Padma Shri for Social Work- Environment. The group works in three shifts – morning, afternoon and evening – carrying bows, arrows, sticks, and even dogs to ward off the mafia.
This year 112 recipients have been selected for the prestigious Padma awards. This includes 4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri awards. Let’s take this moment to appreciate the Winners
