“The Farmer has to be an optimist or he wouldn’t still be a farmer”- Will Rogers

It can be easily stated that the farmers are the most neglected group in India. In a country where more than half the population is dependent on agriculture, it is quite shocking to witness so many farmers killing themselves irrespective of various incentives offered by the Government.  We live in a time where we don't really mind spending on doctors who cure our illness rather pay for the farmers who keep us healthy!

According to Wikipedia, within a span of 2 decades from 1998 to 2018, over 3,00,000 farmers in the country have committed suicide due to a number of reasons such as monsoon failure, high debt burdens, government policies, public mental health, personal issues, and family problems.

Recently the Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan surprised us with his incredible gesture by clearing of 1,398 farmers' loans worth more than 40m rupees.

The actor who had paid of the loans of 350 farmers from Mumbai, wrote on his blog, "Gratitude leans across to the desire of removing some of the burdens that farmers continue to suffer from”. He also stated that this act of his brings him a sense of accomplishment!

He indeed is a superstar in real life too. Well, of course, there are many other celebrities too who have extended their support to farmers in the past and continue it until today.

  1. Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar, who is known for his generous contributions to the Indian Soldiers and their families, once donated around Rs. 90 lakhs to drought-hit farmers in Maharashtra.

2. Gul Panag

Gul has been a part of several social projects including 'Shop For Change Fair Trade'- a concern which promotes fair trade opportunities for poor farmers such as the cotton farmers of Telangana, Vidarbha, and Kutch.

3. Nana Patekar

Nana Patekar has been helping the widows of farmers who committed suicide in the drought-hit Maharashtra financially through his NGO Naam Foundation, which he co-runs with actor Makrand Anaspure, since 2015.

Farmers are the soul of our nation. Any voice that's raised in support of them should be widely acknowledged and appreciated. WannaThankYou appreciates this huge gesture by Amitabh and everyone who are being the voice of our dear farmers.

Do you feel thankful the way we do? Express your gratitude here.
