technially speaking it could be cycled immediately. Adding biosyme (sp?) can help cycle a tank so small in no time. Freshwater tanks could be cycled in that time not to mention any freshwater fish that could fit in that size tank are very hardy and/or can be bought at cheap prices so death to the fish wouldnt be all that bad. Saltwater however i would hold up on seeing as it seems the nitrifying bacteria in saltwater take quite awhile to take over. But freshwater you should be ok within the week using cheap fish of food in the water the tank should be ok soon especaiily with the aforementioned biosyme (sp?)
The time it takes for a tank to "cycle" is not related to the size of the tank.
You can start the cycling before Spring Break, but don’t expect it to be finished by then.
The cycling time varies according to numerous factors, but it usuall takes between three and eight weeks. Four weeks is probably about average.
I’ve cycled a 10 gallon, non planted tank using fish less cycling in 7 days.
You should cycle the 10 gallon first with two filters on it, then one day take 5 gallons from it, along with some gravel substrate, and 1 filter. Place these in the 5 gallon, and the 5 gallon would be cycled. The the only thing you can really place in a 5g is a Betta anyway…
Replace the gravel in the 10 gallon and fill to the top again with new water.
It depends on which method of cycling you choose. The average is 4 weeks.
you can not do a proper cycle it takes about a month or two
